Discover the heart of the Congo with Kwafrika Travel. Our Odzala-Kokoua National Park safaris offer an unrivaled look at Western Lowland Gorillas, Forest Elephants, and the magical baïs of Congo-Brazzaville.

Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Odzala-Kokoua National Park Safaris: Simply called by some as Odzala, it’s one of Africa’s oldest and most evocative wildernesses. Spanning a massive 13,500 km2, it sits in the remote northern reaches of Congo-Brazzaville—and just to clarify for the map-readers, that’s the Republic of the Congo, not the DRC to the east!

The “secret sauce” of this rainforest is the baïs. These are marshy, mineral-rich island clearings tucked within the dense sea of trees. At Kwafrika Travel, we believe these clearings are the best theater seats in Africa, attracting a high-density “cast” of wildlife you won’t see anywhere else.

Rare Wildlife: The “Forest 5” and Beyond

When you book one of our Odzala-Kokoua National Park safaris, you aren’t just looking for the standard Big Five. You’re hunting for the legendary Forest 5:

  • Western Lowland Gorilla
  • Forest Elephant
  • Forest Buffalo
  • Bongo
  • Giant Forest Hog

A Biodiversity Hotspot

Scientists estimate the park hosts 4,500 plant species and over 440 bird species. Beyond the Forest 5, keep your binoculars ready for:

  • Primates: Chimpanzees, De Brazza’s monkeys, and the Guereza colobus.
  • Rare Predators: African golden cat, leopard, and spotted hyena.
  • Avian Wonders: Grey parrots, African pittas, and the Chocolate-backed kingfisher.

Planning Your Journey: Seasons & Landscapes

Odzala-Kokoua is an equatorial wonderland. While the animals don’t migrate, the “vibe” of the park shifts with the rains.

Where to Stay: From Budget to Ultra-Luxe

Choosing the right base is essential for the perfect experience. At Kwafrika Travel, we help you navigate the two different management sectors of the park.

1. Camp Imbalanga (The African Parks Sector)

Best for: Budget to mid-range travelers and those who prefer viewing wildlife from baïs rather than deep-forest tracking.

  • Vibe: Six ensuite canvas chalets on raised wooden decks.
  • Key Feature: A 3-minute walk to Imbalanga Baï—perfect for spotting gorillas and elephants without the strenuous trek.
  • Note: Closed from 21 December to 4 January.

The others three camps are high-end and luxury based, managed by WCS.

2. Ngaga Camp (The Luxury Gorilla Hub)

Best for: The ultimate gorilla trekking experience.

  • The Experience: Known as “Gorilla Central,” Ngaga is Kwafrika Travel’s preferred base for those wanting to come face-to-face with habituated Western Lowland Gorillas.
  • Constraint: Minimum age is 15 years.

3. Lango Camp (The “Treehouse” Experience)

Best for: Exploring the swampy baïs and seeing Forest Elephants.

  • The Experience: This camp overlooks the Lango Baï. It feels like high-end treehouse living, offering some of the most surreal views in the Congo Basin.

4. Mboko Camp (Savannah & Rivers)

Best for: Water-based adventures.

  • The Experience: Located where the savannah meets the forest, Mboko is perfect for kayaking, boating, or walking safaris along the river systems.

How to Get There

  • Arrival City: Brazzaville.
  • The Journey: A scenic 800km drive on the N2 national road. It’s a 9–10 hour trip. We usually stop in Oyo for a surprisingly great cup of coffee and pastries. The national park is also accessed via 2-hour charter flight from the Republic of Congo’s Maya-Maya international airport in Brazzaville. This flight is available from Monday to Thursday, and private flights can be booked for Fridays and over the weekend. From the airstrip in Odzala–Kokoua, it’s a 3-hour road transfer to the Ndzehe Concession.
  • Kwafrika Travel Note: We coordinate your entire booking and logistics to ensure a seamless handoff.

Health & Safety Essentials

Traveling to the Congo requires a bit of prep. Don’t worry; we’ve got your back.

  • Yellow Fever: Mandatory. You must show your yellow vaccination certificate to enter the country.
  • Tsetse Flies: They love dark colors (blue and black). Stick to khaki and light neutrals to avoid being a target.
