Why climb it?

Mount Cameroon (also called Fako or Mongo ma Ndemi) is an active stratovolcano and the highest peak in West/Central Africa at about 4,040 m (≈ 4,095 m often cited). The climb moves rapidly from tropical coastal forest to alpine scrub and a lunar-looking volcanic summit, offering dramatic ecological zones and panoramic views over the Gulf of Guinea.

How to get there

• International arrival: Fly into Douala International Airport (DLA), the main gateway for Mount Cameroon. From Douala it’s roughly a 1–3 hour drive depending on traffic and your base (Buea or Limbe are the usual starting towns).
• Local base towns:Most treks start from Buea (the common trailhead) or sometimes from Limbe. Buea is the easiest place to arrange guides, accommodations and permits.
• Transfers & booking: Kwafrika (or any reputable operator) normally includes a transfer from Douala, the local vehicle to the trailhead, and coordination with park authorities and porters. Light-aircraft options are not typical for this peak; overland transfers are standard.

Routes & typical duration

• Most popular route (Buea → Summit → descend): 2–3 days (one night in a mountain hut or camp, summit overnight/early-morning push). This is the standard, manageable option for fit trekkers.
• Alternative routes / variations: Some groups do a longer 3–4 day itinerary with extra acclimatisation, or use different descent routes (“backside down”) for variety. Very fit hikers sometimes attempt faster 24-hour ascents, but that is not recommended for most visitors.
• Facilities on route: There are basic, maintained mountain huts/caretaker shelters part-way up (used by many guided groups) where you can sleep, get simple meals and store packs. Guides and porters commonly handle hut bookings and food.

How many visitors per year?

Published figures vary by source and year, but official / local estimates put annual visitor numbers in the low thousands. Older local summaries cite ~1,000–1,200 visitors a year while other sources and park groups report figures above 2,000 in some years, visitor totals fluctuate with seasonality, events (the annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope) and security/health travel trends.
