By a traveler from the Philippines
I’ve always dreamed of experiencing Africa beyond the usual safari trails in East Africa. So when I stumbled upon Kwafrika Travel’s trekking Western Lowland Gorillas expedition in Central Africa, I knew this was the adventure I’d been waiting for. What followed was a 10-day journey that changed my perspective on nature, wildlife, and the raw beauty of the Congo Basin. While the 10 days’ expedition was a combo tour between DR Congo and the Republic of Congo, this article, I focus on the Republic of Congo part where I have encountered with Western Lowland gorillas.
Day 1: Crossing the Mighty Congo River from Kinshasa to Brazzaville
My journey began in Kinshasa, the bustling capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. From Beach Ngobila, I boarded a motorized canoe and crossed the mighty Congo River, a scenic 20-minute ride that felt like stepping into another world. Brazzaville welcomed me with its laid-back charm, and I spent the evening unwinding at my hotel, preparing for the days ahead.
Day 2: Into the Rainforest

The next morning, we embarked on a full-day road trip to Ouesso. The landscapes shifted dramatically, from urban sprawl to dense rainforest. It was a long ride, but the changing scenery kept me captivated. By evening, I arrived in Ouesso, where I checked into a cozy lodge and rested for the adventure that awaited.
Day 3: Wildlife Awakenings at Wali Bai

After breakfast, we drove to Bomassa, the gateway to the rainforest. From there, we ventured into Wali Bai, a forest clearing teeming with life. I didn’t spot forest elephants and buffaloes, but enjoyed seeing vibrant bird species. The sounds, the smells, the sheer presence of nature were overwhelming interesting.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking

This was the day I’d been waiting for. We transferred to Djeke and then trekked to Mondika Bai. With experienced trackers guiding us, I had my encounter with habituated lowland gorillas. Watching them in their natural habitat, feeding, playing, resting, was humbling. Their eyes held stories, and their presence was majestic. Trekking Western Lowland Gorillas was a dream the came true, this is after trekking Eastern Lowland Gorillas with the. same tour Operator last year (2024), in Kahuzi Biega National Park.

Day 5: Back to Ouesso
This experience comes unique as only few visitors have experienced Western Lowland Gorillas in their natural habitat in the protected areas that was focused solely on scientific research before recently open it doors for visitors like us. I am thus among the first tourist to trek Western Lowland Gorillas in Nouabale Ndoki National Park.

After a morning of wildlife viewing, we returned to Bomassa and then to Ouesso. The pace slowed, giving me time to reflect on the intense yet beautiful days of trekking and exploration.
Day 6: Retracing the Journey
We traveled back to Brazzaville, passing through lush rainforests and vibrant villages. It was a day of quiet reflection, each mile reminding me of the incredible experiences I’d had.
Day 10: Brazzaville City Tour & Farewell
My final day included a city tour of Brazzaville visited some important and historical areas before being whisked away to Maya Maya International Airport.

Why This Trip Was Worth Every Penny
The package costed a couple thousands of dollars, and it was worth every cent. From gorilla trekking permits to tented camps in the heart of the forest, everything was thoughtfully arranged. Kwafrika Travel’s team, guides, trackers, and support staff, made sure I was safe, informed, and immersed in the experience.

Final Thoughts
If you’re seeking a safari that goes beyond the ordinary, gorilla trekking in Central Africa is it. Kwafrika Travel doesn’t just offer a tour, they offer a full immersion in Central Africa. The experience is unique as it brings you away from popular gorilla trekking destinations such as Uganda and Rwanda. And if you have seen mountain gorillas in those popular destinations, come and witness unique Western Lowland Gorillas in their natural habitat.
I left with memories etched in my heart and a deeper appreciation for the wild.
Would I do it again? Absolutely.
